First project for my children's book class, fully illustrated page out of an existing fairy tale. This is from a shorted form of Thumbelina, the scene where the sparrow takes her away from her situation of having to marry the dull flower-hating mole. This one's a two page spread, I REALLY wanted to do some scene with the sparrow, prefereably an in flight one. ^^ Sometimes I wish the story would have ended here; "the sparrow spirited Thumbelina away from the Mole and Mouse, and they lived happily ever after having adventure after adventure flying about the wide beatiful world as free spirits." Why does Thumbelina have to get married anyway.
Done in watercolour and coloured pencil. No critiques please, I got PLENTY from class. ^^ In fact, I actually altered a couple things in response to their critiques, including photoshoping her neck to be shorter. I'm sure it still looks too long, but at least now she's not a giraffe. I'll upload my storyboard sketches to scraps sometime soon.
Omg, this is so beautiful, and from one of my fav stories as a child too.
I agree though, I wish it had ended here, I'd much rarther have lived my life flying around with Jacquimo than marry that stupid fairy prince ¬_¬*

FOXFIRE
A flame among spring's flowers,
A russet flash through summer's haze,
A spark aglow in autumn fields,
On brilliant snow, a sudden blaze.
As soon as I saw it, I knew what the story was, and you're right, that'd would have been a more free-spirited ending. I wish I could illustrate my story like this! It's so soft. Was it gouache with Prismacolors again?

And still I feel like a prisoner

We knew all the answers
And we shouted them like anthems
Anxious and suspicious
That God knew how much we cheated
