Sunset Landing by Shadow-Wolf Sunset Landing by Shadow-Wolf
Ringing in the new year with a little bit of personal art!  I've been picking at this since early September, just never really had time to finish it off.  One of my new year's resolutions is the make time for more personal art.  I realized that my hectic work schedule is never going to let up, so I can't keep waiting for their to be time to work on my own ideas.  I need to MAKE time for it, even while juggling all the projects I have at hand.  2014 has started off with a major bang, as I'm currently working on a huge children's book project that takes up a lot of time, while still juggling my private commissions queue, 100 Deeds, and several book covers.  So, doing art of my little Nym and her Alecani kin is something I must make time for, or she'll fade into the recesses of my mind, and her stories will never be told.

Oh dear lord this is amazing!Spaz attack  I love the realism with the tail feathers. It's pretty cool how you made the light go through, and when the feathers overlap you make it darker. Very well done!

I love the lighting/colouring here, the sunset effects work wonderfully with Nym's natural colours!  Great job on the pose too, I especially like how her feet look with her toes stretched out ready to land. =)

I absolutely love Nym and your Alecani species! The lighting in this painting is really awesome--it really truly gives the look and feel of a sunset! The trees are a great addition to give that nice atmospheric feel. Those feathers... wow, you're amazing at capturing the transparency that feathers have against backlighting. It's great that you're taking time for personal art! You're absolutely right, you have to MAKE time for it. I'm so glad you are, I look forward to more personal art! :D Congratulations on that children's book as well, that's pretty awesome!

Hear, hear! You gotta MAKE time for it. Kudos on juggling ALL of that though. I can't even imagine. x.x This is really lovely, btw. It's fun and invokes freedom. The light coming through the feathers is a wonderful touch and the way you blended the hand paw to be more bird-like with the talons and the joints is a really unique feature as well.

WOW, I just love the way you did the light coming through the feathers, and just the lighting in general. The contrast between light and shadow is very strong, one thing I've always loved about sunset/sunrise paintings.

I love the amount of detail and the lack of in some areas. The detail on Nym is perfect and the background, although beautiful and really sets the atmosphere of the picture, it is simple and does not detract the attention from where it should be. ;)

Aw, thank you!  I love that about sunrise and sunset too, wonderful time of day light-wise.  I see what you mean about detail for sure, it's something I've been thinking a lot about.  I like details, but I also like conservation of detail, put it where the focus is!

There is nothing like waking up early and drinking tea or coffee while watching the sun rise. Your right, it is a wonderful time of day light-wise. :D

Details are fun to draw. I need to learn how to make backgrounds using colored pencils, it looks so easy with digital painting programs. Any time I try to make a simple background with colored pencils it looks to "noisy" and when I make one a bit more detailed where you can actually tell what the background is supposed to be I have to darken the outline of the focal point so the viewer can differentiate between the two.

Here though, you don't have any prominent lineart, let alone a darkened outline, is there a trick or something, is digital painting way better and easier for backgrounds?

I personally find painting easier than drawing (colored pencils etc) for making backgrounds, because I've been trained to look at shapes and blobs of color rather than lines.  So, thinking of things in terms of blobs of color (paint strokes), lends itself well to painting!  I'm honestly pretty intimidated by colored pencil, but I've seen other artists (like vantid) do amazing things with them, and still be fully capable and highly proficient painters.

I guess when thinking of backgrounds, my mind thinks of blobs of color rather than lines.

Wow, I checked out her gallery. :wow: I must learn how to become as good as her, or as good as you for that matter.

I agree with Tatchit, Nym IS a lovely character.
I'm really liking the different hues of orange and yellow you used for lighting, and also how the background is not over-detailed, making the eye focus on the main subject. So many fantasy artists over-clutter their artwork with unnecessary detail, in my opinion at least, finding a well balanced detail-wise is really a blessing ;>.

Thank you!  I've been trying to find that balance of detail and implied detail, which is much easier to experiment with in my personal art.  In commissions, most people want that high detail, so I always do it up hard core with commission paintings.

Thank you!  I sort of do, I have one character with Osprey inspired markings.  But he's overall a bit too dark to be recognizable as osprey inspired off the bat I think.

I'm really glad you'll be making some Nym again, I really liked the character and the whole idea, and I was really missing her. I'm a big fan of what you have been doing, but the Alecani thing is my favorite, and if you decided to make a book or anything like this I would totally buy, no matter the price.

All that you post here is very good, but, for me, Nym and the Alecani are pure golden.
